The role of Senior Policy Advisor, Climate Change within Engineers Australia’s Sustainable Future Policy Pillar is instrumental in shaping our organization’s stance on critical issues. This role involves strategic leadership, public policy analysis and project management focused on climate change related initiatives. By co-leading this pillar, individuals have the opportunity to contribute to shaping policies that promote sustainability and address environmental challenges aligning with our mission to advance society through great engineering.

The Senior Policy Advisor will work closely with expert members, government agencies, professional associations and industry bodies to develop comprehensive strategies and advocacy campaigns. Key Responsibilities
- Co lead Engineers Australia’s Sustainable Future Policy Pillar, collaborating with the team to set strategic directions and deliver according to our strategy.
- Conduct research, draft policy papers, coordinate input from expert members and execute advocacy campaigns on climate change related public policy matters.
- Establish networks with Engineers Australia’s member groups and external stakeholders to develop and implement programs for public policy development and advocacy initiatives.
- Maintain a deep understanding of public policy issues relevant to Engineers Australia and its members, focusing on Climate Change and sustainable engineering.
- Identify relevant government, parliamentary and agency inquiries and manage engagement with them.
- Develop and nurture relationships with government agencies, professional associations and industry bodies to identify collaboration opportunities on public policy and media issues pertinent to Engineers Australia.
- Represent Engineers Australia at public meetings, industry forums, networking events and government consultations. Communicate effectively with stakeholders through various channels such as in person meetings, phone calls and video conferences.
- Contribute to and support the development of the engineering profession by actively engaging with the climate change community.
- Travel interstate including overnight stays as required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist the executive team with briefings and government relations activities as needed.
- Provide guidance to the communications, media and professional development teams on climate change related matters.
- Cultivate strong relationships across the organization including with the Climate Change Manager for our Climate Smart Engineering Initiative.
- Engage with Engineers Australia’s membership including Office Bearers and other members interested in public policy and advocacy work.
Essential Requirements
- Professional experience in public policy development and advocacy or related areas, demonstrating strategic and innovative approaches to policy issues.
- In depth knowledge and experience in climate change related public policy.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills in written and verbal formats with a focus on influencing decision makers and achieving positive outcomes.
- Established networks within climate change stakeholders or the capability to develop such networks quickly.
- Capability to work independently and manage workload efficiently.
- Understanding of the Australian government system at federal, state and territory levels.
- Digital proficiency, especially in Microsoft 365 and willingness to adapt to new technologies.
Desirable Qualifications
- Tertiary qualifications in a related field.
- Basic understanding of media operations.
