Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections in residential and commercial areas to identify code violations related to:

    • High grass and weeds (for Department of Neighborhood and Business Development assignments only)
  • Investigate suspected code violations based on resident complaints or personal observations.
  • Issue warnings for minor violations and conduct follow up visits to ensure corrections are made.
  • Determine the appropriate course of action for violations, including:
    • Referring serious violations to other relevant departments.
    • Ordering immediate cleanup by collection crews in cases posing a public health or safety risk.
  • Effectively communicate with the public to explain and enforce city codes regarding:
    • Refuse collection procedures, including recycling programs.
    • Snow removal regulations.
    • Other Operations Bureau initiatives.
  • Investigate specific code enforcement issues and collaborate with the Police Department on related investigations.
  • Attend neighborhood association meetings as a city liaison for refuse code enforcement (NBD assignments only).
  • Adhere to all city and departmental safety policies.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate.
  • Two (2) years of work experience in one of the following areas:
    • Refuse collection activities
    • Code enforcement
  • Alternatively, two (2) years of experience in face to face customer service, specifically resolving complaints related to billing, service, etc.
  • Experience in either category (refuse collection/code enforcement or customer service) can be acquired concurrently.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid New York State Class D driver’s license at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
  • Access to a reliable car for daily use.

Supervision

This position works under the direct supervision of a higher level inspector.

Provisional Appointment

This is a Competitive Class position. The selected candidate will receive a provisional appointment and be required to participate in the next Civil Service Exam for this title.

A qualified applicant may hold a provisional appointment until a Civil Service Exam is administered and an appropriate list of eligible candidates is established for a permanent appointment, following the Civil Service Rule of Three. City employees with permanent, competitive status in another department who accept a provisional appointment in this role will forfeit their previous permanent competitive rights.
